Closet Makeover: Operation Rachel Conner
Monday, June 21, 2010
The Issue:
Rachel has tons of clothes from college and doesn't know what to do with them.
The Mission:
Weed out the things that aren't flattering and figure out how to style some of the cute pieces that Rachel doesn't know what to do with.
Operation Suffocating in a sea of Ralph Lauren cable knit sweaters
Rachel seriously has a mountain of these prep school stables, no joke. We tried to work them in to her wardrobe, but they weren't flattering at all, so off to Goodwill they go. We did manage to save a thinner, cashmere Black Label version and paired it with a blazer, skinny jeans, and knee high boots for an equestrian weekend look.
Operation what to do with all this crap I've bought but never worn...
Rachel didn't necessarily want to throw away everything she hadn't worn recently, but just wanted ideas on how to make older pieces more wearable. A ruffled, asymmetrical Betsey Johnson skirt (picture at top) was paired with a simple black top and a punky waist belt to tone down its frou frou element and a seemingly unwearable see-through Rebecca Taylor knit tank was layered under an unbuttoned collared shirt for a flattering casual outfit (above).
Operation I wear the same damn thing to work everyday
Rachel works at an insurance agency, so wearing super trendy clothes everyday isn't exactly an option for her. Just adding an unexpected piece of jewelry like this chunky chain and black stone necklace to a tailored work outfit will instantly spice up her look without sacrificing modesty.
Operation mixing sparkly things together without looking like a fairy princess
Rachel usually goes for understated elegance when putting together an outfit, so when I found a pair of sequined BCBG pumps and a shiny high waisted miniskirt in her closet, I was as happy as a fat kid at the state fair. A pair of black tights and a long suit jacket with rolled up sleeves prevented the sparkly outfit from looking too juvenile and a chain adorned blue top and mixed bangles added pops of color to the otherwise all black look.
