Turkey Day Detox: Day 1

Tuesday, December 2, 2008

Above: Celebrity fitness guru David Kirsch suggests switching from coffee to tea. Tazo teas are my favorite because they come in a multiple of varieties.

7:15 a.m. I drag myself out of bed and down to breakfast. Brett, Alpha Xi Delta's amazing head chef is sick, so Bridgette, a crazy foreign woman who works at the sorority has been left in charge for the morning. She claims that the vegetables are hiding somewhere, so I settle for a boring plain egg white omelet with no stuff inside. I switch my usual cup of Joe (coffee is a no-no on David Kirsch’s plan) for some China green Tazo tea.

7:45 a.m. My schedule today is completely booked from 9:30 a.m. to 1 a.m. so I’m forced to haul ass to the gym in the morning, something that you usually couldn't pay me to do. I never thought getting out of my cozy bed to torture myself sounded especially fun. I use an elliptical machine for a half hour, and then move on to some crunches and stretches. Next to me, a girl with fabulous gams is doing weird leg lifts. I absentmindedly imitate her moves until she notices that I’m copying her. Oops. Time to leave.

9:10 a.m. Back at the house, I’m hungry again, but there are only yogurt cups, assorted cereals and fruit downstairs – all forbidden foods. I pout silently, grab a green tea to go, and head to class.

10:00 a.m. A random surge of nausea seizes me. For a minute, I think I might have to run out of my Roman Culture lecture to go puke. Maybe my body is rejecting this new healthy lifestyle thing.

11:15 a.m. I snack on a couple of slices of turkey and red pepper sticks with Dijon mustard.

12:00 noon I’m exhausted. It’s definitely due to the lack of sleep I had last night, and I’m desperately missing my coffee. This time, I try Awake black Tazo tea. Hopefully it will do the trick.

1:00 p.m. Lunch is a big mixed green salad with cucumbers, red peppers, turkey, and tomatoes with Dijon and olive oil.

4:00 p.m. The Awake tea is not keeping me awake. Au contraire, I keep nodding off in my PR class.

5:30 p.m. I am famished. I gobble up some Asian style chicken with red peppers and gulp down two cups of green tea while enviously eyeing my friends’ crab rangoons. But for the first time all day, I actually feel satisfied after this meal.

9:00 p.m. I'm in dire need of a sugar fix, so I stifle my sweet tooth with hot water and a bit of apple cider mix. Surprisingly, it keeps my sugar cravings under control for the rest of the night.

12:30 a.m. I’m hungry. I smell some pizza at the library and can’t stop thinking about Donatos during my group meeting. At least the first day is over. Phew.
