Turkey Day Detox: Day 5

Sunday, December 7, 2008

Above: Alpha Xi Deltas waiting for the next rousing round of recruitment.

8:15 a.m. Today marks the beginning of IU’s sorority recruitment, the stringently structured process that mainly consists of screaming, careening, preening, feigning (interest, that is), and of course, smiling for two days straight. I go down to breakfast for some much-needed fuel only to discover that Panera bagels in assorted flavors are the only offerings available this morning. David Kirsch’s written word suddenly dances in my head – “Protein, good. Bagels, bad.” So what to do? I reluctantly tear myself away from the mouthwatering arrangement of chewy deliciousness and make myself a bowl of plain oatmeal. I know it’s still cheating, but I consider myself worthy of sainthood for resisting a cinnamon crunch bagel, my utmost fave.

11:00 a.m. I need caffeine, and quick. Not out of necessity, but to keep up my enthusiasm level. A couple of cups of Earl Grey later, and I’m good to go.

1 p.m. A handful of almonds tides over my hunger until lunch.

2 p.m. I get a spinach salad delivered from Mixed Greens because I found out that subs and chips are for lunch. The yummy toppings that came on my salad – turkey bacon, sun dried tomatoes, roasted red peppers and Cajun chicken breast – make it hard for me to covet my friends’ sandwiches. Everyone around me keeps sneezing up a storm, so I drink plenty of green tea and take an Airborne during break to stock up on antioxidants.

4:30 p.m. I suddenly came to the realization that the gym would be closed by the time I got done with recruitment. Do stomping, clapping, and cheering count as exercises?

8 p.m. We’re done, finally. I go get Mexican food with Gabrijel. The options on the menu that I can eat are limited, but I finally decide on shrimp ranchero with sautéed vegetables. The portion is so huge I end up taking most of it home.

10 p.m.
I muster up the energy to do some core exercises in my room for a half hour. It isn’t a lot, but every bit helps.
