The 10 Sexiest Male Fashion Designers

Thursday, February 24, 2011

Have you ever noticed how many hot guys design clothes? I have.

In the midst of fashion week insanity, it's a surprising delight to catch a glimpse of a man who is as exquisite as the clothes he creates.  But enough of my small chat, let's get down to the goods.

10. Stefano Pilati

Blessed with the kind of carefree elegance that only Italian men seem to possess, the creative director of YSL is the quintessential fashionisto. Perhaps the most stylish man on this list, Pilati is constantly handing out tips on how to be cool like him, but while his perfectly mussed up look is oft imitated, his effortless insouciance could never be duplicated.

9. Lazaro Hernandez and 8. Jack McCollough

Hernandez (left) and McCollough (right) took the fashion world by storm in 2002, when their Parsons student thesis collection impressed the hell out of former Barneys fashion director, Julie Gilham, who snapped up the entire line. They eventually named their line Proenza Schouler, after their mothers' maiden names (aw), and have since nabbed loads of critical acclamation and coveted awards, including the inaugural CFDA Fashion Fund in 2004. Since then, the formerly bright eyed youngins have matured into the sexy and sharply dressed GQ gentlemen that you see here today.

I ranked McCollough higher, probably because I have a thing for tattooed blondes, even though the fool cheated on cutie Hernandez with Derek Blasberg in 2005. Despite their breakup, the duo remains friends, and still have a successful working relationship.

7. Riccardo Tisci

When 30-year-old Riccardo Tisci took up the reigns at storied French label Givenchy in 2005, he injected the brand with a twisted goth sensibility that no one saw coming. His first collections received mixed reviews, but no one can deny that fashion's resident bad boy has brought a noir tinged cool to the dusty label.  His designing style goes hand in hand with his personal look, which is dark, sexy and as beguiling as the clothes he designs.

While Tisci is gay, he clearly appreciates sexy women. The visionary is responsible for launching curvy model Lara Stone's career in 2006. He also sent tongues wagging by famously casting his transgender assistant Lea T. in a recent Givenchy ad campaign. A bad boy who appreciates curves and diversity? Now that's sexy.

6. Roland Mouret

Roland Mouret's designs are a curvy girl's secret weapon. With celebrity friends like Scarlett Johansson and Dita Von Teese in mind, the French designer whipped up the now ubiquitous "Galaxy" dress, proving his genius understanding of the female form. His figure flattering looks have inspired dozens of cheap knockoffs, but no one cuts a dress quite like Mouret.

The smoldering former model is a dead ringer for Clark Gable, if he had a French accent and lived  in 2011. I probably wouldn't mind if he slapped me in the face Rhett Butler style either, as long as he kissed it afterward to make it feel better.

5. Yigal Azrouël

I was introduced to Azrouël's gorgeous draping techniques working at Intermix in 2005, but it wasn't until I watched the designer firing Kelly Cutrone on her reality show Kell on Earth that I truly appreciated his gorgeousness (and realized he's straight!). Poor Kell invited Eliot Spitzer's hooker to sit in Azrouël's front row during Fall 2009 fashion week, and he famously kicked her to the curb.

But that's not the only scandal the handsome Israeli-born New Yorker is known for. It's rumored that Azrouël might have had something to do with Billy Joel and third wife Katie Lee's split. Uh, yea. After checking him out, can you really blame her?

4. Marc Jacobs

From fat kid to fragrance campaign star, Marc Jacobs' swanlike transformation has been riveting to watch. The 47-year-old New York native went from unhealthy alcoholic to all organic health nut, and he sports the six pack abs to prove it.

Now we have even more reason to look forward to Marc Jacobs and Louis Vuitton fashion shows. Not that we needed it.

3. Tom Ford

How many designers are hot enough to star in their own ad campaigns? The sexy American is the pure epitome of a triple threat: after single-handedly turning Gucci Group into a $10 billion cash cow as YSL and Gucci's creative director, Ford decided to take a break from womenswear design to pursue directing, which, surprise! he's also fantastic at. His first feature film, A Single Man, was insanely stylish and nominated for loads of awards.

Ford has thankfully returned to fashion, designing exclusively under his own name, and is changing the game of the industry as I type. The photos and video of his ultra exclusive spring fashion show weren't released until months after it took place, creating the type of hysteria and hype that only Ford has perfected.

2. Christopher Bailey

How hot is Christopher Bailey? Hot enough to steal actress Rosamund Pike's beau and make him his own. Hot enough to take Burberry, previously known mainly for scarves and trench coats, and turn it into one of the most desired fashion brands in the world. Hot enough to be 40, but only look 25.

The baby-faced Brit originally stole my heart with his fantastic revitalization of the Burberry brand, but his impish good looks and his masterfully disheveled style are responsible for his undeniable sex appeal.

1. Brian Atwood

One day, while watching The Zoe Report, stylist Rachel Zoe invited shoe designer Brian Atwood to come over and design a pair of boots for her. I don't remember anything else about the episode, because once he appeared, in a cloud of all-American glory, his supermodel good looks instantly bewitched me. Holy hell, this guy is SMOKIN'. Can I get an amen? Which poses my next question: Why are all the hottest guys ALWAYS gay?
